Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition of unknown cause or etiology. It is characterized by pain, redness, and swelling in the area affected, most commonly a limb. Even though the specific cause of CRPS is not known, there are theories pertaining to the mechanism behind the symptoms. One theory states that an abnormal function of the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the symptoms. Another theory suggests that an auto-immune response could cause the redness and swelling associated with CRPS.

There are two accepted forms of CRPS:

It is important to recognize that CRPS is not exclusively a pain disorder. The nerves affected also control muscles and sweat glands, which explains why CRPS patients may have abnormal sweating patterns, muscle abnormalities, and problems with sensation. Expert evaluation is required for the diagnosis and management of CRPS.

CareFirst treatments for CRPS:
