Post Herpetic Pain
Postherpetic pain or postherpetic neuralgia is a pain syndrome associated with shingles. Patients who experience postherpetic neuralgia have typically suffered the disease produced by the chickenpox virus (shingles) with the characteristic rash and blisters. The factor that distinguishes postherpetic patients from the rest of individuals who recover from shingles is that they continue experiencing the effects of the disease after the rash and blisters are gone. Typically postherpetic pain follows a dermatomal distribution, which means that symptoms are felt along the nerves of the skin. The symptoms are sometimes described as a painful, burning sensation that can interfere with sleep.
Postherpetic pain is a very serious condition. It has been shown that postherpetic neuralgia might be associated with a defect in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) which is a very important component of the nervous system. Additionally, postherpetic pain patients are typically older and might have a compromised immune system. Therefore, expert help is needed to address the particular challenge postherpetic pain patients present.
