Sciatica
Sciatica or sciatic neuritis is a condition characterized by pain in either or both lower extremities. The sciatic nerve is in fact a bundle of five spinal nerves that arise from the spine and contribute to the movement and sensation of the lower extremities, from the buttocks region down to the toes. Due to the fact that the sciatic nerve carries both motor and sensory fibers the symptoms associated with sciatica can range from pain along the lower extremity to muscular weakness.
It is important to recognize that not all sciatica patients might experience the same symptoms and that different underlying problems might be responsible for the symptoms. For example, a patient suffering from sciatic neuritis might be evaluated and, depending on the exam results, the patient might be treated for a disc bulge or treated for a spastic piriformis muscle, with very different treatment plans for either underlying problem. Therefore, an evaluation from an expert is definitely necessary to design a very appropriate treatment plan that best address the patient’s needs.
